To maintain the integrity of steel structures in the event of fire, the fire protection coatings are applied. There are two main types of fire protection coatings namely, intumescent coatings and cementitious coatings. The intumescent coatings are also known as passive fire protection (PFP) coatings. Intumescent coatings expand upon exposure to heat into an insulating protective char that reduces the amount of heat transferred to the steel. PFP coatings protect the equipment and critical structures from threat of hydrocarbon hazards such as fires, spills and explosions and find applications in the petrochemical and oil & gas industries.   -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Steps in case of fire:

Firstly, always find out where the nearest emergency exit is as well as where the fire extinguishers are in the restaurant you’re visiting.

Ask the owner if the exit is locked and how you can unlock it in case of an emergency. Make sure the exit is marked properly, and if not, tell the owner to do so. You can always report them for flouting basic fire safety measures.

    2) In case a fire breaks out, call 101 immediately. The sooner you call, the shorter will be the response time.

    3) If there is no smoke, walk quickly to the nearest exit. If there is light smoke, you will have to crawl to the nearest exit. Never go to the roof; always try your best to go down and out of the building.

    4) Don’t ever go for the elevator. It could malfunction because of the fire, leaving you stuck with no way to escape.

    5) The worst case scenario is if the fire is too big and you can’t evacuate. The women who decided to escape to the washroom at the 1Above restaurant died of suffocation. If the washroom is your only escape, try to wet clothing or towels and stuff them around cracks in doors and seal up vents. The idea is not to let the smoke enter.

    6) Wet all the walls, doors and windows and keep a wet cloth over your nose and mouth. Breathe through your nose only.

    7) Don’t attempt to break the windows as you will attract more smoke and flames from outside. Crack open the window if you need fresh air, but close it immediately.

    8) Most importantly, be calm and wait to be rescued.

The holiday season represents a time for family festivities and good cheer. What few of us consider is the holiday season is a time when there is an increased risk of home fires. According to Schriever Fire Emergency Services, many households engage in holiday activities that serve as some of the leading causes of U.S. home fires, including cooking. Christmas trees, candle usage and holiday decorations significantly contribute to seasonal causes of home fires. Add the hectic nature of the holidays, and the chance for home fires grows significantly.

“As everyone gets busier during the holidays, we generally become rushed, distracted or tired,” said Schriever Fire Department Inspector Paul Macek. “That’s when home fires are more likely to occur.”

Fortunately, with added awareness and some minor adjustments to holiday cooking and decorating, the season can remain festive and safe for everybody.

“By taking some preventive steps and following simple rules of thumb, most home fires can be prevented,” said Macek.

    Season for sharing fire safety

Do not link more than three light strands unless the directions state that it is safe to do so.

Periodically check the wires to ensure they are not getting warm to the touch.

Do not leave holiday lights on or lit candles unattended.

Consider using only nonflammable decorations or flame retardant ones. Decorations should always be placed or hung away from any heat source.

Make sure that your tree or any of your decorations do not block an exit way. If a fire occurs, a blocked exit way could put your family at risk.

Never put wrapping paper in the fire-place; it could cause a very large fire, throwing off dangerous embers and sparks that could result in a chimney fire.

If you do use lit candles, never place them on a tree. Place them in a stable candle holder.

Keep candles at least 12 inches away from all flammable materials.

If you decide to go with a fresh tree remember to keep the stand filled with water as long as the tree remains inside.

Keep the tree away from fireplaces and any other heat sources decorations and wrapping paper.

Flame resistant fabric and flame retardant are two terms that are used to describe a material that is self-extinguishing after removal of an external ignition source.

The distinction of inherent versus non-inherent fibres of fabrics, is whether the flame resistant or retardant properties are intrinsic to the polymer or fibre properties or whether a flame retardant or resistant chemical treatment applied somewhere after the fibre production. The flame resistance of a fabric is primarily a consequence of the properties of the fibre. Different yarn properties and fabric construction may contribute to increased flame resistance.

Fire officials suggest the use of artificial lighting to illuminate jack-o-lanterns, encourage parents to purchase flame-retardant costumes, and remind Santa Barbara County residents that scary drought conditions are still in effect as we approach the Halloween weekend.

Nationwide, candles are the main cause of two out of five residential fires that are reported each year, according to statistics provided by the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

  • 30 Oct 2014

Reportedly one of the biggest dangers concerning holiday fires is from the use of candles. According to the Tennessee Fire Marshal’s Office, data from the National Fire Protection Association shows Halloween is one of the top five calendar days for candle fires.

“Be careful with your candles in jack-o-lanterns,” Fuqua said. “You can buy battery operated lights you can put in them, and those are a lot safer than open flames.”

Flashlights and other battery operated lights can serve as alternatives for candles or torch lights. But if you choose to use an open flame inside a jack-o-lantern or for torches, be sure to place candles safely away from the pathway of trick-or-treaters, whose costumes could possibly brush up against the flame.

When decorating with spooky outdoor lights, make sure they are manufactured to be used outside, Fuqua said. And check that they meet safety standards and have been tested by a recognized testing laboratory.

The most cost effective method of doing this is to add a flame retardant additive during processing. Flame retardants are added to different materials to reduce the risk of fire. They save lives, prevent injuries and property losses as well as protect the environment by helping prevent fire initiation and spread of fire, thereby limiting damage. Careful choice of the flame retardant for a particular polymer and application is important. Additives must be chosen to function properly in the polymer they need to protect. Other properties of the flame retardant must also be considered. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The federal government is deploying more planes to support firefighters who’ve been confronting bigger and badder blazes in recent years.

Under a provision in a military bill that President Barack Obama signed into law Dec. 26, the U.S. Forest Service will get 22 military aircraft — seven HC-130H Hercules air tankers and 15 C-23B Sherpa cargo planes — beginning this year.

The provision, authored by Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and John McCain, R-Ariz., requires the military to transfer the planes for use throughout the U.S. But they’re likely to be used the most in the West, where wildfires are on the rise because of tinderbox conditions.

Usually firefighters callflame retardant (fire retardant) drops  “CNN drops,” because they areoften called for in situations where they look good on television but will havelittle impact on the fire. Part of the problem is that in much of the West, wildfires are wind driven events. During the Fourmile Canyon fire, here inBoulder, I heard one contractor announce that the fire wouldn’t have destroyedall the homes it did if they had just put his planes in the air when it brokeout, but the wind was ripping at more than 60 miles an hour at that point. It’s pretty difficult to fly a plane at low speeds into a canyon to dropretardant in those conditions, and often the wind just blows the retardantaway.

Last year two P2V air tankers crashed on the same day – onebelly landed in Utah and the crew survived. The other crashed into a fire inNevada killing its two crew members. A couple months later a C130 from the AirNational Guard crashed while dropping retardant, killing four members of itscrew from the North Carolina Air National Guard. Statistically, according toAndy Stahl, firefighters’ odds of dying fighting a fire go up tenfold when theyclimb into a plane.
